How long do I have to clear my sidewalk after it snows?

Most properties in Regina must clear their sidewalks within 48 hours following a snow event. Properties within the City’s “Schedule B” area, which is primarily located downtown, must clear their sidewalks within 24 hours.

When does the clock actually start?

The countdown begins once the snow stops falling, or once wind stops blowing snow onto the roads and sidewalks — not from the moment the storm began.

What happens if I don’t clear it in time?

The City can issue a Notice of Non-Compliance giving the property owner a specified timeframe to clear the sidewalk. If the problem is not corrected, the City can arrange to have the sidewalk cleared and apply the cost to the property owner’s tax account.

Where should the snow go?

Snow cleared from the sidewalk can be placed on your property or along the curb next to the sidewalk, as long as it does not interfere with traffic. Do not shovel or blow snow into the driving lane. Snow from driveways and private walkways should remain on your property.

Is this actually enforced?

Yes. Regina City Council approved the sidewalk snow-clearing requirement as part of the Clean Property Bylaw in 2021, and it took effect city-wide on January 1, 2022.
